Standoff suspect to appear in court

A 33-year-old Kapolei man who held a gun to his head during a 10-hour standoff Saturday in Kapolei, forcing police to evacuate dozens of residents, will make an initial court appearance today.

Scheyenn K. Melendez, who listed his address as Kaiau Avenue, was charged yesterday with unauthorized entry into a dwelling and two weapons charges. He was being held on $50,000 bail.

Police said Melendez forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s Kaiau Avenue home in Pae Ko Gardens at about 12:20 a.m. Saturday.

He held a gun to his head and refused to give it up but allowed his 30-year-old ex-girlfriend to leave the house after negotiators arrived and a SWAT team surrounded the home. About 30 residents had to sleep at a recreation center during the standoff.

Melendez surrendered at about 10 a.m.

He has six convictions, including four felonies for robbery, car theft, terroristic threatening and burglary.

Police seek pakalolo-smoking robber

Police are looking for a man in his 30s who robbed a 32-year-old man of his car Saturday after they finished smoking marijuana together in the hills above Makiki.

The victim, who only knew the suspect by his first name, drove them to the area and parked on the side of the road at about 1:30 p.m., police said.

After smoking, the suspect flashed what appeared to be a black handgun and took the victim’s wallet, cell phone and the vehicle. Police received the complaint about three hours later, away from the scene.
