ON HIS FAREWELL night before leaving Honolulu last week, Johnny Depp dined at Morton’s Steakhouse in a private boardroom. The party of 18 on Aug. 17 included Depp’s two children, his parents, his longtime girlfriend, French actress Vanessa Paradis, and friends. Four of his security men and two drivers were also in the restaurant. During filming of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," Depp quietly dined four times at Morton’s with family and friends. The New York steak was a favorite and Bordeaux was Depp’s wine of choice. He had requested 1990 Cos d’Estournel Saint-Estephe for dinner on the final night and the Morton’s sleuths found three magnums of the exclusive vintage for him. Depp’s favorite dessert was key lime pie, and he was given the Morton’s cookbook that contains the recipe. The steak house crew that handled Depp and Co. said he was very gracious and that his family members were delightful. …

MURPHY’S RUNWAY: After Murphy’s overflow luncheon crowd died down on Aug. 18, waitress Jan Diehl was notified by hostess Maria Ranche that a group of 10 would be coming in at 2:30. Jan greeted the people when they entered and saw that one of them looked much like Tim Gunn of Lifetime’s "Project Runway." "You look exactly like Tim Gunn," Jan said. "I AM Tim Gunn," said the man in the blue suit and pink shirt. Jan almost fell over. "I am such a fan," she said. When she brought out the group’s food, Gunn said he wasn’t hungry and just had Diet Coke. He was polite and shook hands with others in the eatery who visited his table. Jan was totally stoked working around her idol. When he departed, Gunn pursed his lips and blew her a kiss. …

DEAN SENSUI, executive producer of "Hawaii Goes Fishing" and former Star-Bulletin photo chief, is usually doing stories about other people and seldom has the chance to go fishing himself. But earlier this month he took his boat out with friend Mike Young and Young’s sons Daniel, 17, and Kevin, 15, now living in LA, who were home on a visit. "I thought I’d help them catch something a little bigger than papio or moana, maybe mahimahi or ono," Dean said. "We were heading toward to our fishing grounds when one of the reels started buzzing. As I was slowing the boat, Mike said, ‘Oh look. It’s jumping out of the water.’" Marlin! Kevin, Mike and Daniel, in that order, "fought the marlin for about a half-hour without the benefit of a fighting chair or harness before I was finally able to grab the leader, snag the hook with a gaff and release the fish," Dean said. "I estimated it to be 200 to 300 pounds. None of us had ever caught a marlin before." …
