Coast Guard rescues visitor off Na Pali Coast

Coast Guard personnel Sunday night rescued a 60-year-old male visitor stranded on the rocky shoreline of Kauai’s Na Pali Coast yesterday.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted the man, who was using a signal light from shore, Coast Guard officials said in a news release.
The Coast Guard said the man was visiting his son on Kauai. He had departed Hanalei at 10:30 a.m. in a canoe and was reported missing after he failed to arrive at Polihale Beach by sunset.
The Coast Guard launched a helicopter at 8:51 p.m. Sunday from Barbers Point, and the Coast Guard Cutter Ahi also joined the search at 9:13 a.m.
The air crew got to the area about 9:40 p.m. and spotted the man waving a light. A rescue swimmer was lowered and the man was hoisted into the helicopter and taken to the Lihue Airport, where he was reunited with his family.
Coast Guard officials did not have details as to what happened to the man’s canoe or where the man is from.
