Acting Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell has announced nearly $1 million in grants will go to community groups working to prevent underage drinking on Oahu.

The city says the six Oahu-based groups were selected for the federal money based on their experience, capabilities and proposed activities.

They are Alu Like, Coalition for a Drug Free Hawaii, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu, Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii, Hawaii Speed and Quickness, and Hina Mauka.

Caldwell said in a Monday news release that in these challenging economic times, the city is pleased to support programs that will reduce the risk of underage drinking in the community.
