House Minority Leader John Boehner is pledging to appoint U.S. Rep. Charles Djou to a seat on the House Appropriations Committee should the Hawaii Republican win re-election and the GOP take control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Charles Djou has my full support for a seat on the House Appropriations Committee,” Boehner (R, Ohio) said today in a statement. “Charles would fight to curb government spending while working to ensure the Pacific Fleet, defense installations and military personnel in Hawaii have the resources they need to help keep America secure.

Djou is in a close race with Democratic state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa to represent Hawaii’s 1st Congressional District. Recent polls show the race to be a statistical tie.

Most national polls indicate Republicans are poised to take control of the House as Majority Democrats fend off an electorate unhappy with incumbents.

Boehner would become the Majority leader in the House if the GOP succeeds.

“I look forward to working with him (Djou), the Republican leadership and the Steering Committee to place him on the House Appropriations Committee at the earliest possible opportunity,” Boehner said.

“I believe that we need to reform the earmark process and the way that the Congress spends the people’s money,” Djou said. “As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I look forward to working with Senator Inouye, Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, to reform the earmark process and ensure that our priorities receive adequate funding.”
