Group to host vegetarian talks

The Vegetarian Society of Hawaii offers three free talks, all starting at 7 p.m., at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park. Call 944-8344 or visit www.veghawaii.org.

» Saturday: “Sugar-Free Desserts,” by Susan Teton Campbell, chairwoman of Slow Food Maui. Campbell will use nuts, fruits, seeds and wild-crafted sweeteners to make Cacao Truffles and Pineapple Berry Pie.

» Nov. 18: “Forever the Rainbow: How the Colors of the Garden Can Save Your Life,” by Madhava Das, who discusses ways to reduce your risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

» Dec. 18: “Raw Food Diets: What’s True, What’s Not?” by dietitian Vesanto Melina, who explains how to create an optimal raw or high-raw diet.

Musical Wednesday

Mango Jam, a free concert with performances by Brother Noland, Mailani, Ernie Cruz Jr. and others, is tonight at 7 at the Mission Memorial Auditorium, 550 S. King St. The concert is presented by the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts with support from the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Reservations required; call 768-6622.
