Police identified the victim as Debra A. Alani.

She was driving a 2008 Ford pickup truck and traveling north on Kukaiau Ranch Road when she lost control and ran off the left side of the road down a 30-foot embankment and overturned. Alani was not wearing her seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle.

The accident occurred on Kukaiau Ranch Road 3.6 miles south of Hawaii Belt Road at 11:29 a.m.

The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.

An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.
