A man was taken to the hospital after running into trouble on his personal watercraft at Kawela Bay this afternoon.

The man, who appeared to be in his 40s, was returning to the beach after riding waves when he and his vehicle got caught in a large set and washed onto rocks around 3:42 p.m., said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services.

The man managed to make it to shore where he was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition, Cheplic said.

At the time, surf was 10 to 12 feet face value with occasional 15-foot waves, he said.
