Undisinfected waste water discharged off Pearl Harbor

About 110,000 gallons of undisinfected effluent from the Fort Kamehameha Wastewater Treatment Plant at Hickam Air Force Base was discharged into the ocean this morning, the state Department of Health reported.

The waste water had undergone secondary treatment, but did not go through the disinfection stage when an ultraviolet-light disinfecting unit did not function because of a loss of power.

The effluent was discharged through the Fort Kamehameha outfall near the entrance channel to Pearl Harbor, just off the ewa end of the Reef Runway.

The discharge was reported at 7 a.m.

Boaters and divers are advised to stay out of the area for the next several days.
