Wong named preseason player of the year

Hawaii junior Kolten Wong was named the Western Athletic Conference preseason player of the year today.

The second baseman also made the 2011 Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American team after hitting .357 with 15 doubles and 40 RBIs as a sophomore.

The Rainbows, who are the defending WAC tournament champions, were picked to finish second in a vote by the league coaches.

Fresno State, which won four straight WAC titles before losing to UH last season, received four first-place votes. The Rainbows were picked second, followed by Nevada, San Jose State, New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech and Sacramento State.

Joining Wong on the first team from the Rainbows are designated hitter Jeff Van Doornum and pitchers Matt Sisto and Lenny Linsky.

Van Doornum hit .330 a year ago with a team-best 14 home runs. Sisto posted a 5-5 record with a 5.27 ERA as a sophomore, but was key down the stretch in leading the ‘Bows to their first WAC tournament championship in 18 years.

Linsky led the team with a 1.64 ERA, posting a 4-0 record with 12 saves in 44 innings pitched.

San Jose State pitcher Blake McFarland was named the preseason pitcher of the year.

Hawaii opens the regular season Feb. 18 at home against No. 9 Oregon.
