Police investigate a stabbing incident at Kalani High School on May 18, 2010. Authorities charged Zoe Michael Espinoza, now 18, as an adult with attempted murder yesterday for allegedly stabbing a classmate.

Authorities charged a Kaimuki teenager with second-degree attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of a classmate in a Kalani High School classroom last year.

Family Court waived jurisdiction Monday over the suspect, Zoe Michael Espinola, now 18, police said, and he will be tried as an adult.

Police arrested Espinola Monday at Oahu Community Correctional Center, where he has been held.

Students described the two students as best friends and members of the swim team. Some said  the stabbing was possibly due to a dispute over a girl.

The stabbing occurred at 8:50 a.m. May 18 during a math class, in which 30 students were in attendance.

Espinola, then 17, allegedly pulled out a large knife and stabbed the boy multiple times in the torso, and inflicted knife wounds to his face. The then 16-year-old boy was in serious condition.

Police arrested Espinola on suspicion of second-degree murder after he turned himself in at the school’s administrative office after the stabbing.

Espinola’s bail was set at $100,000.
