GAUHATI, India >> Police say suspected insurgents have ambushed a lawmaker’s convoy in India’s troubled northeast and killed six police and a civilian driver.

Police official L.M. Khaute says another six police in escort vehicles were wounded in a hail of gunfire. The attack happened Friday near Imphal, the capital of Manipur state.

Khaute told The Associated Press that W. Keishing, an independent lawmaker, escaped unhurt in the roadside attack.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack. However, at least 17 separatist rebel groups are active in Manipur and often stage hit-and-run attacks on government forces.
