Police arrested a man on suspicion of fleeing a scene of an accident and drunken driving Monday after firefighters helped him down from the Makiki Post Office roof, to which he jumped after running down the H-1 freeway.

Honolulu police Lt. Patrice Gionson said the man had a heavy odor of alcohol and may have been involved in two hit-and-run crashes — one in Kapahulu and another on the H-1 freeway.

Gionson said the man abandoned his vehicle on the H-1 westbound before Punahou Street and ran along the freeway. The man then ran from the westbound lanes, hopped over the center median, crossed the eastbound lanes and jumped 20 feet onto the roof of the post office from the freeway, Gionson said.

Firefighters helped him down about 7:30 p.m.
