Detectives are investigating the discovery of a woman’s body near Nakalele Point, on the northernmost point on Maui, and have taken a man into custody after he jumped off a cliff as officers approached him.

Police said the man jumped off a cliff and into the ocean near Nakalele Point after officers tried to question him following a report of a fight between a man and a woman Thursday evening on Kahekili Highway near mile marker 37.

Officers responding to the 6:27 p.m. call, saw the man jump into the ocean. Police discovered the woman’s body about an hour later.

The Maui Fire Department and United States Coast Guard attempted to retrieve the man from the ocean, but the effort was suspended last night.

This morning at 6:45 a.m. police were airlifted by helicopter to the rock point and took the man into custody. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment. However, his injuries were not life threatening.

Police say they will release more details on the incident at a later time.
