Maui firefighters were battling a brush fire in the mountains above the Kapalua Airport in west Maui this morning, while another fire on sugar cane land in Puunene overnight has been extinguished.
Firefighters are relying on the fire department helicopter to extinguish the blaze in a remote area of west Maui, where there is no access.
About a dozen firefighters responded to the brush fire alarm just after 1 a.m. today. They estimate that about 5 to 10 acres have been burned.
Overnight, nearly 100 acres of cane field burned in Puunene.
About nine firefighters responded to the alarm that was called in just after 10 p.m. However, Hawaii Commercial and Sugar Company officials said they would handle the blaze, Maui fire officials said.
The fire was extinguished just after 1 a.m. today. No Maui homes or other business were affected.
