Honolulu fire spokesman Capt. Terry Selig stands on the bridge and points to the culvert underneath where the body was found.

A man was admitted to a hospital in critical condition Wednesday after he apparently fell about 14 feet into a drainage canal near City Mill in Kaimuki.

Firefighters found the man at 8:38 a.m. face-down and unresponsive at the bottom of the concrete drainage canal that crosses St. Louis Drive just mauka of Waialae Avenue, Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

Paramedics treated the man in the canal, and firefighters raised him to street level. The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Seelig said the man’s friend told firefighters that he woke up about 8 a.m. and saw his friend in the canal.
