Every Sunday, "Back in the Day" looks at an article that ran on this date in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. The items are verbatim, so don’t blame us today for yesteryear’s bad grammar.
The need for even more aggressive advertising of Hawaii was stressed in discussions at the regular monthly meet of Hawaii Tourist bureau today.
It was pointed out that because of adverse effects of the maritime strike that not only should the tourist bureau’s regular advertising efforts be continued against the day when the ships were moving again but also should, if possible, be increased in an effort to make up some of the losses incurred during the strike.
Details of its rearranged budget of $200,000 for the calendar year 1937 were considered and approved, $100,000 being allocated for colorful display advertising in prominent mainland periodicals, providing sufficient funds are forthcoming later this year, both through increased subscriptions from the general public and in a larger appropriation from the legislature, which convenes next month.
Riley H. Allen expressed the belief that more bureau funds and efforts should be devoted to local receptions, entertainment and recreation of visitors, and the consensus of committee members was that if the budget were fully financed some changes might be made to this effect. This matter will be discussed in more detail at a special meeting on tourist recreation which will be held next month.
The strike resolution, as proposed by the Chamber of Commerce of Honolulu, was unanimously adopted.
Today’s meeting marked the last session of the tourist bureau committee appointed by the last chamber of commerce administration and Chairman George P. Denison thanked the members for their consistent attendance and loyal cooperation throughout the year.
Upon motion of P.A. Swift, vice chairman, seconded and put by Lawrence M. Judd, also a vice chairman, the committee returned the compliment by a hearty and unanimous vote complimenting the chairman and the staff on their widespread efforts and energy displayed throughout the year.
Members present beside the chairman were Messrs. Riley H. Allen, R. Alex. Anderson, M.L. Berlinger, H. Stevens Bowen, LeRoy C. Bush, Earle G. Hedemark, F.B. Herman, M.R. Levey, Lawrence M. Judd, M.W. Mitchell, P.A. Swift and L.P. Thurston.
