Speed and alcohol suspected in Maui truck crash

Maui police suspect speed and alcohol were factors in a single-vehicle crash Saturday morning that left a 20-year-old man in critical condition.

Cody Endo was driving a raised 1994 Toyota pickup with over-sized and extending wheels toward Makawao on Kekaulike Highway in Kula when he lost control of the truck at about 12:20 a.m., police said. The pickup hit a guard rail, climbed an embankment, and overturned, landing on its roof in the backyard of a Palena Place home.

Endo was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the truck, police said. He was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

Police closed Crater Road and directed traffic on Kekaulike Highway during their investigation. The road is in a residential area with a posted speed limit of 30 mph.
