Police arrested two teenagers who allegedly stole an unattended backpack from a Kapolei-area beach Sunday and were confronted by the bag’s owner.

Police said a 18-year-old man allegedly took the backpack off the beach at about 3 p.m. and gave it to a 17-year-old male accomplice who hid it in another bag. The pair searched the bag before hiding it in the trunk of their car.

The pair returned to the beach where the owner of the bag, a 43-year-old man, questioned them and 17-year-old boy admitted the theft and returned the bag, police said.

When the victim examined his backpack he discovered that the suspects allegedly damaged the SIM cards in his cellphone, police said.

The two suspects were released pending further investigation after their arrest for investigation of second-degree theft.
