LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Police in Nigeria say a car has exploded in a city near Nigeria’s capital, wounding one person.

The explosion happened Sunday morning in the city of Suleja in Niger state. Police spokesman Richard Oguche said the blast wounded one person on a busy road near hotels in the city.

A spokesman for Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency issued a statement confirming the blast and asking onlookers to leave the scene to allow rescuers to work.

That area has seen several attacks from a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, including a Christmas Day bombing of a Catholic church there that killed at least 44 people.
