Gunmen shoot Philippine reporter who covers Aquino

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Gunmen have shot and seriously wounded a journalist who is assigned to cover the Philippine president. Police are hunting down the suspected attackers.

President Benigno Aquino III, Filipino journalists and the national police strongly condemned the attack on The Daily Tribune reporter Fernan Angeles.

He was beaten and shot six times with a pistol late Sunday by unidentified men near his home in suburban Pasig city in metropolitan Manila.

Pasig police chief Senior Supt. Jessie Cardona said Monday that Angeles was attacked when he left his home to go to a store. He is being treated in a hospital’s intensive care unit.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists has ranked the Philippines as the second-deadliest country for journalists behind Iraq.
