Strong quake hits western Indonesia, no tsunami

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia >> Officials say a strong earthquake measuring magnitude 6.2 has struck off the coast of western Indonesia but there is no danger of a tsunami.

The U.S. Geological Survey says Sunday’s quake was centered about 400 miles southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, at a depth of 9 miles.

Indonesian meteorological official Suharjono says there is no threat of a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Two powerful quakes measuring magnitude 8.6 and 8.2 triggered a tsunami watch on Wednesday in more than two dozen nations and island territories, from Australia and India to as far off as Africa.
