Saint Mary’s wins 2 to split series

Collin Ferguson hit a two-run double as part of a five-run fifth inning to help Saint Mary’s sweep a doubleheader against Hawaii on Sunday with a 5-3 win in the second game at Les Murakami Stadium.

Brenden Kalfus hit a three-run double with two outs in the 10th inning to help the Gaels win the opener 6-2.

Hawaii lost the final two games of the series to drop to 21-15 overall while the Gaels evened their record at .500 at 17-17.

Collin Bennett went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader to finish 8-for-12 in the series with four runs and six RBIs.

He hit a two-run single with one out in the seventh inning of the first game to tie the game at 2-all.

Bennett doubled with two outs in the ninth, but was thrown out trying to score from second on a single by Breland Almadova.

David Longville (1-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in three innings. Starter Scott Squier allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Hawaii used four different pitchers in the second game with freshman Kyle Dowdy (1-2) taking the loss.

The Rainbows will play their next seven games on the road, beginning with a series at San Jose State next Friday. The Spartans are 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference after sweeping Fresno State this weekend.
