Firefighter retirees endorse Cayetano for mayor

The 800-member Honolulu Fire Department Retirees Association today endorsed former Gov. Ben Cayetano in the race for Honolulu mayor.

“Ben understands the problems that we face as retirees on fixed incomes and trying to make ends meet,” Donald Chang, association president, said at a news conference at Cayetano’s headquarters. “The city of Honolulu is broken and needs fixing.

Cayetano, the former two-term Democratic governor, is running against incumbent Mayor Peter Carlisle and former city Managing Director Kirk Caldwell. He is the only one of the three opposed to the city’s planned $5.27 billion rail transit project.

But Caldwell has received the endorsement of the firefighters union, the Hawaii Fire Fighters Association.
