Maui police investigate a fatal shooting at the parking lot Mana Kai Maui Resort in Maui.

Police shot and killed a suspected car thief in the parking lot of a Maui resort, and a second suspect remains at large.

Hundreds of guests at the beachside Mana Kai Maui Resort have been evacuated as authorities investigate.

Maui police Criminal Investigation Division acting Capt. Peter DeLima said a second suspect who was not in the car at the time officers arrived at the scene remains at large.

DeLima said two men arrived in the stolen car, and one left "to do what at the hotel, we don’t know."

Police are continuing to look for the second suspect.

Mana Kai Maui Resort General Manager Winston Chinn said this afternoon that several hundred guests haven’t been able to return to their rooms while police are on the scene.

Maui County spokesman Rod Antone says police received a report of a stolen vehicle in Kihei and found it in the resort’s parking lot.

Antone says the suspect tried to flee in the vehicle, then apparently pointed a handgun at an officer. The officer fired. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chinn says employees reported hearing gunshots, but there are conflicting accounts on how many shots.
