Kauai police are asking the public for tips on who damaged the chair lift for people with disabilities at the Waimea public swimming pool.

When pool staff returned from the New Year’s break, they found the entire chair lift ripped off its platform and thrown into the pool, a county news release said.

Staff members spent several hours Thursday retrieving broken parts from the pool.

“We’re very disappointed that this senseless act was committed,” Lenny Rapozo, director of the Kauai Department of Parks and Recreation, said in the release. “Now, people with special needs who use the chair lift in order to engage in water activities can no longer do so at the Waimea pool.”

Rapozo said in addition to the costs of replacing the lift, “the time spent tending to this project means time taken away from another parks project.”

Police ask that anyone with information regarding this incident to call police dispatch at  241-1711 or Crime Stoppers at 241-1887.
