A police traffice investigator examines a motorcycle involved in an accident on the Moanalua Freeway this afternoon.

A 59-year-old motorcyclist from Kapolei was left in critical condition today after crashing into a guardrail on the Moanalua Freeway.

According to police, the man was seen racing his 1997 Harley Davidson motorcycle through traffic against a red 2010 Dodge Charger shortly before the crash.

The man was thrown from the motorcycle upon impact. He was transported to the Queen’s Medical Center by Emergency Medical Services.

The Charger fled the scene.

The crash occurred at 1:38 p.m. in the westbound lanes approaching the Tripler offramp.

Police said excessive speed was a likely factor in the crash.

The westbound lanes were closed for about two hours following the crash, creating a massive traffic jam.

According to Emergency Medical Services, a 15-year-old girl was transferred to a trauma center in stable condition from the same crash scene. It is unclear how she was injured.
