Alohi Robins-Hardy scored 16 points and Lilia Maio corralled 12 rebounds as No. 2 Kamehameha outlasted No. 6 Punahou 50-38 on Saturday at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
Guard Tiare Kanoa added 12 points and four assists as the Warriors (12-0) improved to 8-0 in the ILH. Punahou (9-5, 4-4 ILH) led 25-23 at halftime, but the Warriors opened the second half with an 8-0 run and never trailed again.
Punahou tied it at 31-all on Keaupono Fey’s fast-break layup, but the Warriors got five points from Robins-Hardy to finish the third quarter.
The 6-foot-1 forward then scored a layup on a feed from Kanoa, and after Kanoa hit a pull-up jumper, the Warriors led 40-35.
Punahou shot 1-for-13 in the fourth quarter against the Warriors’ man defense, and after Robins-Hardy and Tori-Jean Cambra sank free throws, Kamehameha had its biggest lead at 46-37 with 1:54 to play.
Maio was especially effective in the first half, scoring all nine of her points. She finished with a team-high five steals to go with her three offensive boards.
“We know our roles, what to do with the ball, and we work together,” Maio said. “It’s about getting the win. Punahou is good at contesting the ball and their posts work really hard, but for us, it’s about being unselfish.”
Asia Olivieri had 10 points to pace Punahou. Fey had nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Warriors shot just 38 percent from the field (18-for-48) and committed 14 turnovers against Punahou’s relentless man-to-man defense, but coach Darold Imanaka loved his team’s mental toughness.
“They had some mistakes and a couple of defensive lapses, but they fought hard,” he said. “The main thing is that we improve every game.”
Ryder scored nine points and sparked a Warriors defense that limited the Buffanblu to 33 percent shooting (13-for-39). Punahou committed 19 turnovers.
Robins-Hardy hustled for nine boards as Kamehameha outrebounded Punahou 34-24 and shot 65 percent at the free-throw line (13-for-20). The Buffanblu, who were 1-for-6 from 3-point range, were 11-for-15 at the foul line.
