The National Weather Service wasn’t the only one to put out an advisory Sunday.

The unranked Hawaii men’s volleyball team literally served notice to the rest of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation by taking the series with No. 2 Pepperdine with an impressive 25-21, 25-22, 25-16 sweep. The Warriors (3-6, 2-4 MPSF) had six aces while consistently putting pressure on the Waves (3-3, 3-2) from the serving line for most of the two hours at the Stan Sheriff Center.

It was the first time in five home contests that Hawaii didn’t go five with an opponent. Sunday’s straight-sets victory in front of 1,495 was as sweet as it was short.

"It’s a good feeling to have ended it right now (in three)," sophomore hitter Brook Sedore said after his 15-kill performance. "Things just clicked. No one played bad today.

"We went in the locker room (after Set 2) and talked about not giving them back any breath, to come out with a lot of fire. It was a team effort and look at what we can do when that happens."

Junior setter Joby Ramos was as consistent as he was adept at running a diversified offense. Freshman hitter Siki Zarkovic continued to impress, putting down 15 kills, and was in on four of the Warriors’ 11 blocks.

Sophomore hitter JP Marks added nine kills as Hawaii won consecutive matches for the first time this season. Pepperdine got 11 kills from senior hitter Maurice Torres and nine from Punahou product Josh Taylor, a sophomore hitter.

Serving was crucial. The Warriors, who had 21 service errors Friday, cut it down to eight. The Waves had only four errors, but no aces.

"One of the keys was for us to serve well," said Ramos, a Roosevelt product who transferred after two seasons at Pacific. "Beating the No. 2 team was a team effort. It means a lot, but it doesn’t mean a lot. There’s a lot of the season left."

Hawaii has little time to relax before preparing for Friday and Saturday home matches with No. 4 Stanford (5-2, 2-2).

"When you look at it, we’re like a half a dozen points from three more wins," Warriors coach Charlie Wade said. "We had match ball on Long Beach State and we were right there with Ohio State and Penn State (all five-set losses).

"But these two wins are significant. In a league where everyone is good, two league wins is very good."

Hawaii saved its best for last.

The Warriors’ suspect serving from Friday turned sizzling in Set 3. Ramos’ ace capped a 3-0 opening run and, when he slammed back a service overpass, Hawaii was rolling.

At 11-6, Pepperdine was out of timeouts and answers. Johann Timmer’s ace — the fifth of the night for UH — made it 20-8. The only real question was how many match points the Waves would hold off — four — before Marks ended it with his ninth kill,

"You’ve got to give them all the credit — they made plays, served well and their outsides hit well," Pepperdine coach Marv Dunphy said. "You don’t go too far in men’s volleyball unless you win the serve-receive battle, and they did a lot better at that than we did."

The Warriors’ block was pretty good, too. Hawaii had 11 stuffs to Pepperdine’s 11.5, holding the MPSF’s top-hitting team to .190, well below the .369 the Waves brought to Honolulu.

The first two sets were close, but close turned into closed out in the pivotal Set 2. It was a seesaw battle with 16 ties and five lead changes.

The Warriors appeared to take control by going on a 4-0 run that gave them an 18-17 lead, a spurt that included a resounding solo block by Marks on Torres.

The Waves continued to answer, tying at 18, 19 and 21. Zarkovic’s 13th kill put the Warriors ahead for good at 22-21, with Averill and Marks closing it out with consecutive kills.

Things went from bad to worse for Pepperdine after the 10-minute break, while things went from good to great for Hawaii. The closest the Waves came was at 4-2 before the Warriors pulled away. UH’s largest lead was 22-9.
