Evening paddle leaves Maui kayakers stuck on reef

Three people had to be rescued by the Maui Fire Department after their two kayaks ran aground on a reef on the west side of the island.

Maui fire officials said they received a distress cellphone call at 8:15 p.m. Thursday night. A man and two women had gone for an evening paddle at Camp Pecusa in Olowalu when they got stuck on the reef about 200 yards from the beach.

One of the two kayaks had taken on water and was abandoned.

A firefighter on a rescue boat located the three people and was able to tow them back in one of the kayaks.

None of the three needed medical attention.

A fishing vessel located the abandoned kayak and brought it to shore along Hoopiilani Highway.
