Maui resort worker charged with stealing from guest’s luggage

Maui police charged a houseman at a Wailea resort with second-degree theft after security video allegedly showed him taking items from a guest’s luggage.

John D. Bueno was arrested Monday afternoon, charged and released on $1,000 bail, poice said. He is scheduled to be in court March 14.

A couple from Marysville, Mich., arrived at the Grand Wailea Resort about 1:20 p.m. Monday and left their bags with a bellman while they waited for their room, police said. The visitors later discovered that pieces of jewelry and a camera worth a total of $11,100 were missing from their luggage.

Police said security video showed Bueno take the bags from a store room and return them a few minutes later. Police arrested him about 3:40 p.m. at the hotel.
