Hawaii falls to No. 1 UC Irvine in five sets

Kevin Tillie put down 22 kills and Colin Mehring added 13 as No. 1 UC Irvine turned back upset-minded Hawaii 21-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-21, 15-11 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match tonight in Irvine, Calif.

It was the ninth five-set match for the No. 11 Warriors, tying the program’s record. Brook Sedore put down 20 kills and Siki Zarkovic added 15 for Hawaii (5-9, 4-7 MPSF), now 4-5 in five-setters.

JP Marks had 13 kills and 12 digs for the Warriors, who finish their four-matches-in-five-days road trip Tuesday night in a rematch with the Anteaters (13-3, 10-3).

UCI, the defending NCAA champion, ran its winning streak to nine while improving to 5-1 in five-set matches. The Anteaters outlbocked the Warriors 16-8. 

Hawaii, coming off Saturday’s five-set win at UCLA, got down early in tonight’s Set 5, trailing 5-0 and 10-3.
