UH softball: Parnaby strikes out 15 in win over Portland State

University of Hawaii pitcher Kaia Parnaby tied a school record with 15 strikeouts and Keiki Carlos and Leisha Li’ili’i homered to help power the Rainbow Wahine softball team to a 7-0 win over Portland State tonight in the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.

Parnaby struck out 15 Portland State hitters, passing the previous career best of 14 she set last season and tying the UH single-game record set by fellow Australian Brooke Wilkins in 1994. She got all the run support she needed in the bottom of the first when UH’s first four hitters scored.

Kelly Majam led off the inning with a walk and scored on Kayla Wartner’s triple to right field. Carlos then hit her third home run of the season to give UH a 3-0 lead. With two out in the inning, Alyssa Villalpando lined an RBI double into the left-center gap to score Jessica Iwata.

The lead grew to 7-0 when Li’ili’i hit a three-run homer with two out in the second inning.

Parnaby allowed a single in the fifth and a double in the seventh before closing out her fifth shutout of the season.

The tournament continues Saturday with No. 21/24 UH facing Portland State at 4 p.m. and East Carolina at 6.
