University of Hawaii senior Kaia Parnaby tied the school’s single-game strikeout record for the second time in less than a week in the Rainbow Wahine softball team’s 4-1 win over Syracuse tonight.
Parnaby struck out 15 Syracuse hitters, tying the mark set by Brooke Wilkins set in 1994. Parnaby previously matched the record in a win over Portland State last Friday.
She walked two and threw her second consecutive one-hitter.
Syracuse’s lone hit was a solo home run by Danielle Chitkowski in the top of the second inning.
The bottom of third of the UH order put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Jazmine Zamora singled off of first base and Alyssa Villalpando followed with a walk. Kaile Nakao, UH’s ninth hitter in the lineup, bounced a single up the middle to score Zamora from second.
The Wahine took a 2-1 lead in the third when Kayla Wartner led off the inning with a home run over the scoreboard in right field.
Zamora and Nakao extended UH’s lead to 4-1 in the sixth with RBI doubles.
Parnaby (15-2) then struck out the side in the seventh to close out the win.
UH (17-5) plays East Carolina at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
