Gov. Neil Abercrombie nominated two retired business leaders and the former director of the Maui High Performance Computing Center to the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, the governor’s office announced today.
If confirmed by the Senate, Eugene Bal III, Barry T. Mizuno and Randolph A. Moore will fill the Maui, Hawaii County and at-large seats on the 15-member board.
Bal is a retired U.S. Navy Captain who also served as executive director of the Maui High Performance Computing Center for 16 years.
Mizuno is being nominated for another term on the board, representing Hawaii island. He retired as manager of Puna Geothermal Ventures and a private energy consulting firm and is a former finance director and managing director for Hawaii County government.
Moore retired from Kaneohe Ranch and then served as public school teacher and assistant superintendent at the Department of Education. He also earned two master’s degrees and a Ph.D from UH Manoa.
Moore will fill the remaining term of former regent Michael Dahilig and will begin a new term in July, if he is confirmed by the Senate.
The nominees were selected from a list provided by the Regents Candidate Advisory Council.
Regents terms are for five years. They are not paid for their service on the board, which oversees the operations and leadership of the 10-campus University of Hawaii system.
