Readers go wild for ‘Shake’ competition

We received so many great entries for the Shaka Shake Video Contest, sponsored by the Star-Advertiser and Hawaii News Now, that we expanded the list of finalists to nine.

With 64 entries submitted, the judges looked for those that best captured the enthusiasm and anarchy of "Shake" videos while adding a twist with a creative concept or unusual location.

Watch all nine finalists now at Hono­lulu­Pulse.com. The video with the most new "views" by 5 p.m. Wednesday will win the $300 first prize. Second place is $200; third, $100.

Winners will be announced Friday in the Star-Advertiser’s Today section and on Hawaii News Now’s "Sunrise."

The finalists:

» Waimea Bay: Kahuku High School senior Jack Germain used Facebook to crowd-source the cast for his epic, filmed atop the rock at Wai­mea Bay. (Check out the shorebreak!)

» Taekwondo Center: Instructor Shane Chisum’s disciplined students remain stoic as he busts a move in the intro section of this video.

» Moanalua MeneMacs: We don’t know who that lady in the red jacket is, but she totally brings it in this entry by the media class at Moana­lua High School.

» HPU Tennis Teams: A colorful backdrop and crazy moves netted this entry a spot in the finals. (And did we mention the shark?)

» Makena Beach Resort: A timely shout-out to the Easter bunny got notice for this video featuring the Maui hotel’s staff and executives.

» Stick It Hawaii/Hilo: This entry by Matthew Cordero of Techy3 Design Studios and Justin Kaai­hue of Stick It Hawaii was shot at the King Kame­ha­meha statue in the Hilo Bayfront. (Dude can shake it!)

» Kua o ka La School: Teacher Myles De Coito of Kua o ka La Public Charter School in Puna gets extra credit for schooling his students in Shakeology.

» Habilitat Hawaii: Staff and residents of the Kaneohe Bay facility made a splash with special effects, creative staging and a two-camera setup.

» Sampaga Family: The Sampaga family of Mililani, from the baby to their 70-year-old grandmother, is a solid representative of all the entries shot in living rooms.
