A 58-year-old visitor was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center this morning after he was attacked by a shark off of Lahaina.

The attack occurred in waters fronting 110 Kaanapali Shores Place at about 8:30 a.m., according to a Maui County news release.

The man, of Marina Del Rey, Calif., suffered two deep lacerations on his right thigh, above the knee, according to county spokesman Rod Antone.

The victim described the shark’s head to be the size of a basketball. Surfers said they saw a grey, four-foot long shark in the area of the attack, according to Antone in a news release. Lifeguards believe it was a reef shark.

Maui County Ocean Safety officers closed the beach for a mile in both directions of where the attack took place. The area will remain closed until noon tomorrow. Enforcement officers from the Department of Land and Natural Resources will assess the beach Wednesday to determine whether to reopen the beach.
