Officials reopened beaches between Black Rock and Honokowai Beach Park on Maui at noon Wednesday after there were no shark sightings, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Lifeguards closed the beaches Tuesday after a shark bit a 58-year-old California man who was sitting on a surfboard in clear waters at a spot called Rainbows, about 100 yards off Kaanapali Beach fronting the Maui Kai condominium resort. The visitor from Marina Del Rey suffered two deep lacerations to his right thigh.

He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center and was in stable condition.

The 58-year-old man described the shark’s head to be the size of a basketball. After the attack occurred, lifeguards spotted a 6-foot-long shark in the area. Surfers at another surf break said they had seen a 4-foot-long shark in the area of the attack. A Maui county spokesman had said lifeguards believe the shark surfers saw was a reef shark.

Police recovered a video camera that was attached to the 58-year-old man’s surfboard.

The man and his wife own a condominium at Maui Kai. General manager Chuck Massey said the man was expected to be discharged from the hospital Wednesday after surgery.
