The University of Hawaii softball team hit nine home runs and swept today’s Big West doubleheader with UC Riverside at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Rainbow Wahine (31-7, 9-0 BWC) hit four home runs in the first inning of a 12-2 win in today’s first game and launched three more in their first turn at-bat in the finale on their way to an 8-1 victory.

UH head coach Bob Coolen earned the 900th win of his career in today’s opener and No. 901 extended UH’s winning streak to 11.

Kaia Parnaby earned wins in both games and improved to 28-3.

The No. 16/21 Rainbow Wahine sent 16 batters to the plate and hit four home runs in a 12-run first inning in today’s first game. UH scored nine runs before UC Riverside recorded its first out of the game and ended the game in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.

Kelly Majam opened the first inning with a leadoff home run to right and Jessica Iwata added a three-run shot to left for the 50th homer of her career.

UH loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter and Sharla Kliebenstein cleared them with a grand slam to left field. Brynne Buchanan, the ninth batter in UH’s lineup, walked and Majam scored her with a double in her second plate appearance of the inning.

Keiki Carlos singled to score Majam and Leisha Li’ili’i homered to center to push the lead to 12-0.

UC Riverside scored its first runs of the weekend on back-to-back RBI singles by Ariel Shore and Kayla White in the top of the third.

UH struck early again in the series finale with Majam, Kayla Wartner and Iwata hitting home runs in the bottom of the first.

The Wahine put together a four-run rally in the third inning highlighted by Kliebenstein’s two-run homer. Kaile Nakao gave UH an 8-1 lead by hitting the first home run of her career and UH’s eighth of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Parnaby went six innings and earned her third win of the series. Freshman Loie Kesterson closed out the win in the circle.

Parnaby raised her strikeout total to 265, moving into second on the program’s single-season chart. Brooke Wilkins set the record of 324 in 1994.
