Maili resident Isaac Brumaghim has had sharks take his fish but never one as jumpy and close to him.
Brumaghim, 37, said he was fishing during a fishing tournament about two miles offshore Waianae on Sunday when a shark took his fish and jumped out of the water about nine feet from the rear of the kayak.
“I’ve never had a shark jump from behind me,” he said.
Brumaghim belongs to a small but growing number of kayak fishing people who enjoy the open ocean sport.
He captured a video of the event from a camera mounted on the bow of his kayak and posted it on YouTube.
