  • Three Maui hunters needed assistance from Makawao firefighters when they got disoriented by fog and darkness on the Waiakoa Loop Trail early this morning.

Maui Fire Department personnel recovered the body of a 52-year-old Maui man who apparently drowned after slipping and falling in a pond at Seven Sacred Pools in Kipahulu Sunday morning.

The man, identified as a Maui resident, reportedly fell 12 feet into the pond then failed to surface. A MFD crew used snorkel gear to locate the victim in about 30 feet of water. He had been submerged for more than an hour.

The body was airlifted from the pond to a landing zone of the south side of the stream.
