Mount San Antonio College junior guard Garrett Nevels has committed to play for the Hawaii basketball team, a team source confirmed Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Nevels, who will have two years of eligibility, can officially sign with UH as soon as today (Wednesday), the first day of the spring signing period.

Nevels, of Los Angeles, averaged 19.8 points on 57.8 percent shooting from the field, 81.4 percent from the free-throw line and 47.6 percent on 3-pointers as a Mounties sophomore.

His teammate Corey Allen took an official visit to UH at the same time as Nevels at the start of the month. Allen committed to South Florida last weekend.

Nevels, out of Palisades Charter High School, was the CCCAA State Tournament MVP in helping the Mounties to their first state junior college men’s hoops title. Nevels had 32 points in the championship game against Chaffey College.

He leads the team with a 3.58 GPA, according to the Mt. SAC website.

Missouri transfer Negus Webster-Chan is the other known commit for Gib Arnold so far this spring. Two others, Michael Thomas and Stefan Jovanovic, signed with the Rainbow Warriors in the fall.

Nevels took a visit to Morehead State last weekend. It’s believed his recruitment came down to UH and Morehead after some previous interest from New Mexico.
