The Coast Guard is searching for a possible person in the water after a personal watercraft was found adrift near Kailua-Kona Thursday.

A blue Wave Runner was found by a commercial fishing vessel two miles west of Kailua-Kona and returned to “jet ski island,” a floating platform where rental jet skis are kept. The watercraft was confirmed to belong to a rental company, which said it suspects someone tried to steal a jet ski.

A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was diverted to conduct a search of the area and has been on scene since approximately 10 a.m. The Hawaii County Fire Department is assisting with a boat and shoreline search of the area.

The Coast Guard requests that anyone with information on the possible person in distress to call the Sector Honolulu Command Center at 842-2600.
