Three Hawaii kids among 18 national contest winners

Kiani Alvarez-Ranan and Mailani Wendt from Kapolei, and Makenna Hayes from Ewa Beach, are among 18 winners of the 2012-13 National Safety Poster and Video Contest, staged by GEICO insurance.

They won for their poster designs, which are displayed on the GEICO website.

Other poster contest winners are from California, New Jersey, No. Dakota, Texas and Virginia, while the three video contest winners hail from Florida and Maryland.

The challenge posed by GEICO this year for students from Kindergarten through 8th grade, was to create a hand-drawn or computer-generated poster that features a superhero character promoting save driving messages. Winning posters are displayed within the GEICO website.

The video contest competition is for high school students.
