  • Three Maui hunters needed assistance from Makawao firefighters when they got disoriented by fog and darkness on the Waiakoa Loop Trail early this morning.

A brush fire blackened 50 acres Wednesday in Honokohau Valley on Maui.

Crews were dispatched to the 12:11 p.m. fire at Mile Marker 36.5 and found 20 acres of brush burning on the makai side of Honoapiilani Highway in an old pineapple field, a fire official said.

Fire crews from Napili and Lahaina, and others later from Wailuku and Kahului worked to douse the flames. Two helicopters were also dispatched, and a county Public Works tanker was also used.

The fire was contained at 3:04 p.m.

No one was injured and no damages were reported.
