The Medical Examiner’s office has identified the two people who were killed when a pickup hit a tree on the Pali Highway early Sunday morning.

The third occupant — a 15-year-old girl —  was taken in critical condition to the hospital.

Killed at the Pali Highway traffic scene were Mark Garcia, 33, and Kamalani Kalama, 13. The two were living in Kailua.

Police said the Kailua man driving the vehicle lost control of the truck, which went off the highway and ended up in a tree on the westside of the Pali Highway. The accident occurred half a mile north of Nuuanu Pali Drive on the Pali Highway at 12:25 a.m. Garcia was heading north.

Speed is factor in the crash. Police are still investigating if alcohol was involved.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.

There have been 26 traffic deaths, compared to 21 at the same time a year ago.

Police are also asking for help in finding out what happened. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call traffic investigators at 723-3413.
