Rainbows clinch series against UC Davis

Stephen Ventimilia hit the tie-breaking RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning and Hawaii tacked on three more runs in the eighth to pull away for a 6-2 victory over UC Davis on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

Austin Wobrock added a two-run single in the eighth and finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Kalei Hanawahine went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored for the Rainbows (14-33, 9-14 Big West).

Corey MacDonald continued his winning ways, earning his seventh victory while pitching at least six innings for the 12th consecutive start.

MacDonald (7-5) allowed two runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings with no walks and five strikeouts. He needs to go at least six innings in his final start of the year at UC Riverside to reach 100 for the season.

Marc Flores went 2-for-4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Lawrence Chew struck out Spencer Henderson with the tying run on third in the eighth and finished out the game to earn his third save.

Spencer Koopmans (1-8) allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss for UC Davis (19-33, 5-18).

UH will try for its first series sweep in its regular-season home finale on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
