Dana Hills (Calif.) High School left-hander Blake Taylor, who signed to play for Hawaii next season, was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second round (No. 51 overall) of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft that began today.

Taylor, who is listed at 6 feet 3, signed with the Rainbows last summer after originally committing to San Diego State.

The assigned value given to the 51st over pick is $1,065,400. Every pick in the first 10 rounds has an assigned value and teams are allowed to use the total value of each of their picks to sign players.

The last player selected by the Pirates with local ties was left-hander Sam Spangler out of the University of Hawaii in 2009. Spangler was taken in the 20th round but decided to return to UH.

The first two rounds of the draft were held today with round 3 beginning Friday at 7 a.m.
