No tsunami alert after earthquake near Solomon Islands

No tsunami warnings were issued after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea Thursday.

The earthquake hit at about 5:16 p.m. local time (7:16 a.m. Hawaii time) at a depth of about 44 miles.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was centered 57 miles south of Arawa, Papua New Guinea and 336 miles west-northwest of Honiara, Solomon Islands.

The USGS issued a green alert, meaning there is a low likelihood of fatalities or serous damage from the earthquake.
