Maui moped rider dies after collision with car

A 19-year-old Maui man died after the moped he was riding struck a car.

Chance Uyeda of Lahaina was driving south on Lower Honoapiilani Road near the Kahana Reef condominium at 8:17 p.m. Thursday, when the moped crossed the center line and struck a car traveling in the opposite direction, police said.

Uyeda, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died, police said.

A couple from Virginia in the car did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

Uyeda is Maui County’s ninth traffic fatality for 2013, compared to 15 for the same period last year.
